Chicago, IL — May 2025
In a significant move to expand global learning opportunities for its students, Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU) has taken the lead in promoting the Study in Africa Summer Program—a continent-wide initiative designed to immerse students in African cultures, academic environments, and socio-economic contexts.
NEIU’s support comes at a time when there is growing recognition of Africa’s importance in global affairs and the need to broaden the geographical diversity of student mobility programs. By sharing details of the Study in Africa Summer Program on its campus, NEIU is paving the way for its students to engage with new perspectives and develop a deeper understanding of a region that is often underrepresented in traditional study abroad offerings.
The Study in Africa Summer Program is hosted across multiple African countries, with participating students able to choose their preferred destination. The initiative is driven by a mission to provide high-impact learning experiences through classroom engagements, cultural excursions, service learning, and interaction with local students and communities.
Each host institution is offering two cohorts:
Cohort 1: July 1–15, 2025
Cohort 2: July 16–30, 2025
Organizers are now calling on other U.S. and global universities to follow NEIU’s example by sharing the program with their students. According to program coordinators, the support of universities is crucial in ensuring that more students can access opportunities that will give them a “different worldview”—a goal especially vital in today’s interconnected world.
“This is about more than just travel,” a representative from the organizing team said. “It’s about changing perceptions, building bridges, and helping students see the world through a broader lens. We’re proud of Northeastern Illinois University for their leadership, and we invite other institutions to join this impactful initiative.”
Universities interested in learning more or in sharing the program with their students can access program materials via the official website or contact organizers directly.
